Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times October 20, 2014 after the claim was made that McDonald lunged at officers with a knife. Three officers were sadly found not guilty at the beginning of 2019. Now, new information is surfacing about lies the cops made that tried to justify them killing McDonald.
According to KTLA 5, four officers have been fired for covering up the murder and lying about what actually happened that day. gt. Stephen Franko, Officer Janet Mondragon, Officer Daphne Sebastian and Officer Ricardo Viramontes were all “discharged” from the Chicago Police Department.
The Chicago Police Board ruled that the officers violated their duty by “describing the alleged threat posed by Mr. McDonald in an exaggerated way, while omitting relevant facts that support the opposite conclusion. They added that the cops’ explanation is misleading and false.
“Indeed, taken on their face, the officers’ accounts depict a scene in which Mr. McDonald was the aggressor and Officer Van Dyke the victim—a depiction squarely contradicted by reality. Put simply, the officers wanted to help their fellow officer (Jason Van Dyke) and so described the incident in a way to put him in the best possible light,” the board wrote.
The video actually showed McDonald walking away from the cops and not attacking them in any way. Van Dyke was convicted last year though of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery. This past January, he was sentenced to 81 months in prison. The cops covering this information up should’ve been fired a long time ago. At least Laquan McDonald is finally getting the justice he deserves.
