Hip Hop Figures From the Carolinas: Charlamagne Tha God

Charlamagne Tha God 20The self-proclaimed “Prince of Pissing People Off,” Charlamagne Tha God, has come a long way to get to where he is. Originally, Charlamagne Tha God was from Monk’s Corner, South Carolina, where he wound up on the wrong side of the tracks. Getting his life back on track, Charlamagne Tha God got involved in local radio in Charleston.

It was then when Charlamagne Tha God took the risk that led him, first, to Wendy Williams and eventually to Power 105.1 in New York City. Together with DJ Envy and Angela Yee, he is one third of “The Breakfast Club,” hip hop’s most-popular radio show. Charlamagne is clearly the breakout star of the show and one of the most-influential voices in hip hop.

Charlamagne Tha God often speaks on his time in South Carolina, even telling Hip Hop Vibe about it in 2013. No, Charlamagne Tha God is not a rapper, but he’s had two shows on MTV and has a strong role on “Guy Code.” Outside of this, Revolt TV airs each morning broadcast of “The Breakfast Club,” not too bad for a high school dropout.

It’ll be interesting to hear Charlamagne Tha God’s take on J. Cole’s new album.
