Much like Jay-Z, there was once a time when hip hop fans could expect an Outkast album every year. But, as the albums came and the platinum plaques, along with the critical acclaim. Even with good music and strong critical reactions, Andre 3000 and Big Boi needed a break and when they wanted to re-start, they no longer had their label’s support.
Wanting to release new music, Andre 3000 encouraged Big Boi to release a solo album. But, with the lack of support from Jive Records, Big Boi had to go elswhere. At the time, L.A. Reid was at the helm, so he quickly agreed to release Big Boi’s debut album. As a solo artist, Big Boi now finds himself on the Def Jam roster.
Whenever Big Boi sat down with Sway Calloway for MTV’s “RapFix Live,” he would address the Outkast situation. After being upset with an interview he did in which he jokingly spoke on Andre 3000’s Gillette sponsorship. After his words were taken out of context, Big Boi spoke on Outkast for the last time until he and his partner, Andre 3000, are ready to speak on it.
