Today’s urban music landscape is shaped by such artists as Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Many members of the older generation accuse the new school artists of forgetting who helped evolve the music. While Lil Wayne is considered a great rapper by most, many old school hip hop fans are disappointed in his lyrics. The same could be said for Kanye West.

Long before the days of Kanye West and Lil Wayne, Salt-N-Pepa were among the biggest artists out, making repeated hit singles. Primarily, the Salt-N-Pepa were known for their two femcees, Salt and Pepa, but there was a third member. From the early days of hip hop and into the early 1990s, no hip hop crew was complete without the DJ.

DJ Spinderella was the third member of Salt-N-Pepa, but when the group faded from the spotlight, so did she, but she has been very observant. During the holiday season, several popular artists have taken to the turntables. The list includes the previously-mentioned Kanye West and Lil Wayne, along wiht Alicia Keys. The artists DJ-ing impressed many, but not Spinderella.

During a rant on Twitter, DJ Spinderella admitted she rapped and she was good at it, but she never called herself a rapper. Meanwhile, Alicia Keys named herself DJ AK-47, and Lil Wayne has also given himself a DJ name. Feeling it is a slap in the face to the true DJs, Spinderella said “record sales are low, become a DJ.” Right now, being a DJ is popular and Spinderella said artists are now getting on the wheels in order to remain relevant.

Continuing the rant, DJ Spinderella said she is willing to give out lessons, but everyone starts from the bottom. She said her true anger came from how loosely the DJ term has been used recently. Spinderella said there are several terms, a DJ being a disc jockey who turns records on a machine and there is also a TJ, a technology junkie who uses technology to play music. The tweets brought negative feedback and Spinderlla told those who were upset with her tweets to hit the unfollow button.
