In 2009, Drake became the focus of a major bidding war. Many labels wanted a piece of Drake, as he was the most-successful mixtape rapper, ever. His “Best I Ever Had” single was a mixtape track dominating the radio.
Universal Records wanted Drake, but he and Lil Wayne had a close relationship. At the time, Lil Wayne was on top of the world, but his label, Young Money, was fledgling. This changed when Drake signed, leading Nicki Minaj to also sign.
It’s no secret that Jas Prince is the one who linked Drake with Lil Wayne and his Aspire label is always credited on his music. In the past, Prince and his father have issued warnings to Lil Wayne, shifting to Birdman and Cash Money Records after their falling out, defending Wayne. Now, they are filing a lawsuit against Cash Money Records over Drake’s music.
