When Nick Foles went down with a shoulder injury in the first game of the season, the world got introduced to Gardner Minshew. A 6th round pick in this year’s NFL draft, Minshew was named the starter for the Jacksonville Jaguars while Foles recovered from his injury.
During his tenure, fans feel in love with Minshew creating a Chuck Norris-type folklore about him on the internet. It was great marketing for the NFL, having a successful journeyman story of a unlikely hero who was finding a way to win for the most part. From the stories of his unorthodox workout routine at Washington State to the story of his dad naming him Gardner Minshew II even though his name isn’t Gardner, the back-up QB became a fan favorite in a short time.
When Nick Foles came back as the starter, it appeared that Minshew magic was going away. However after three turnovers from Foles in the first half, fans started to chant “We want Minshew”. They got their wish as Foles was benched in favor of Gardner taking over as the starter in the second half. While fans seem to be pleased, Minshew is still up and down himself.
