Yesterday afternoon, French Montana discussed his label deal with Angie Martinez of Hot 97 and continued to explain his decisions. Last month, following several months of bidding wars between several record labels, French Montana decided to sign with Bad Boy Records. During his interview with TheBoombox.com, French Montana said he signed with Bad Boy because they needed him as bad as he needed them.
Among the labels lining up to sign French Montana was Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. Last year, West’s label enjoyed tremendous success. However, G.O.O.D. Music’s success was overshadowed by the success of the Maybach Music movement. Both labels were interested in making one more big move to end 2011, signing French Montana. It turns out French Montana was considering joining G.O.O.D. Music, before ultimately deciding to sign with Bad Boy Records.
French Montana said he met with Kanye West twice while he was considering where he would end up signing. Because he was growing in popularity, French Montana was used to making money, so there were certain things he expected. One turn-off from Kanye West was that he does not own a phone. In order to get up with Kanye West, French Montana had to email him, which he does not know how to do. If French Montana needs something, he needs to call his label boss, but a label boss without a phone cannot be called. Because of this, French Montana turned down G.O.O.D. Music, but maintains good relations with them.
Still, French Montana said Kanye West is talented and they would have made history had he signed.
