Back in 2008, Jay-Z created Roc Nation after completing his time as both an executive and artist for Def Jam. He immediately signed J. Cole to the Roc Nation roster and soon behind him was Jay Electronica. Many joked that both of these artists having “J” start their names helped them, but Jay-Z signed two Southern rappers to his new label.
But, listening to J. Cole and Jay Electronica, it’s clear these are not traditional Southern rap artists. Instead, they represent a new age sound that fits in more with the diversity of the United States. People from all over the world live in various areas and this influences such things as music.
While there was a wait for J. Cole to release his debut album, it’s been nothing compared to how long Jay Electronica fans have waited. MTV was present at the red carpet of the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards and they caught up with Jay Electronica. Nadeska Alexis had the pleasure of speaking with him, as he spoke on Jay-Z and his album delays.
