A few weeks ago, Kanye West announced that he would be running for president in this year’s election He sent out a tweet saying We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION” He initially received support from Elon Musk, 2 Chainz, and most recently, Chance The Rapper.
The problem with West announcing his candidacy was that it was too late for him when it comes to eligibility. As CNN reported, West had not registered with the Federal Election Commission, presented a campaign platform, collected enough signatures to be able to get on the presidential ballot, and also missed the deadline to register as an Independent in states. After reports today that he received 2% of votes in a national poll, he is coming out saying that he is dropping out of the election, according to New York Magazine’s Intelligencer.
Steve Kramer, a member of West’s initial campaign team, simply said that he is “out.” He didn’t explain why this is the case but he’d let Intellinger know once they officially ended all of their plans. One definitely has to wonder if West knew he wasn’t eligible from the start. TMZ reported last week that people around West are concerned that he is going through a bipolar disorder and this may very well be the case. A vote for him would’ve been a vote for Trump anyway. 2020 is not the year to play around and vote for celebrities like West who had supported Trump in the past.
