Lexington teen dies after school incident; Family seeks answers
A Lexington teenager’s sudden death has left his family grieving and searching for answers. Emmanuel Emeka, 17, died after a seizure at Henry Clay High School. His family spent Mother’s Day mourning at the University of Kentucky hospital. That’s where doctors tried to save him.
Emmanuel’s mother, Irene Mwele, said she “saw a lot of doctors around him trying to save him and a lot of police officers.” His 9-year-old brother, Fabien, described Emmanuel as his best friend. Meanwhile, his 14-year-old sister, Ndaya, expressed disbelief and sadness.
Witnesses claimed an alleged fight at school involved Emmanuel. After the fight was broken up, one student reportedly hit Emmanuel on the head. Later, he suffered a seizure. As a result, he was rushed to the hospital. However, Fayette County Public Schools denied a fight occurred. Instead, stating it was a medical emergency.
Irene last received a call from the school about the emergency but has not heard back since. She feels the school neglected her son and wants closure.
“The school is like a second family to him, so they are supposed to take responsibility when she’s not around,” she said.
Emmanuel’s best friend, Modoul Danso, described him as an energetic, kind-hearted person.
“It hurts. It still hurts… It’s just he played a big part in all of our lives. We just miss him. It doesn’t feel the same anymore.”
Emmanuel was set to graduate in two weeks and had plans for college. A GoFundMe page for Emmanuel has raised over $10,000 to support his family.
