A change has come in hip hop, as success is no longer guaranteed through having a record deal. Instead, rappers are getting their money independently various ways. It happens frequently that mixtape rappers get signed to lucrative record deals, among these artists are Drake, Meek Mill, French Montana, and Kendrick Lamar.
While Rocko has had major label backing in the past and has it now, he spent most of his time as an independent artist. His independent buzz picked up and it led to L.A. Reid signing him to Def Jam. Rocko briefly represented Def Jam before going back independent and building more buzz, signing with L.A. Reid again.
Now, Rocko is on Epic Records and has the success known as Future to show for his abilities as an executive. Deep down, Rocko is still an independent artist and he controls his music. During his latest interview with Vlad TV, Rocko talked about the independent movement he has that Wale supports.
