Had it not been for hip hop figures, such as Russell Simmons and Jay Z, there may have very well been a John McCain presidency. However, the messages Barack Obama had resonated with hip hop gatekeepers. They campaigned for him and donated money.
Obama was the candidate of change and hope and, to his credit, he accomplished a lot in his two terms. But, there was plenty of sacrifice in order for Obama to be president. It was this sacrifice that led to many feeling alienated by hip hop’s first president.
Russell Simmons is a hardcore vegan and he has lived this lifestyle for twenty years. All of his books are about exposing the truth about the food people eat and what they drink. When he saw Obama at the Flint Water Crisis, Russell Simmons was upset and he called the president out on Twitter, saying he wasn’t worth shit for that one.
