Courtesy of Twitter, a lot of phenomenons have taken place, giving birth to a whole new industry. Clearly, the social network is a powerhouse, as celebrities have given it clout. Often overlooked is how hip hop helped build Twitter into what it is.

Back in 2009, a Twitter account using Kanye West’s name made some controversial statements. Because of the rant Kanye West put down, the social network began to verify major accounts. There it is, without the input of Kanye West, there is no verifications on social media.

Twitter has gone through many changes, facing many rumors, along the way. Often, there are rumors about Twitter increasing its character limit, but there is now official news, on this. The social network has doubled its character limit from 140 to 280 characters.
