US schools announce “heat days” amid record temperatures

Record-breaking temperatures are gripping much of the United States. So, schools are taking unprecedented steps to ensure student safety. Gabrielle Wessels, a mother from Orange County, New York, discovered on Facebook that her children’s school district, Minisink Valley Central, announced early dismissals for Thursday and Friday due to extreme heat. The district cited uncomfortably high temperatures in classrooms. Despite efforts to maintain airflow with high-powered fans, rooms are still hot.

Students like Wessels’ children, Claire (6) and Hunter (11), are unexpectedly home for “heat days” this week. Wessels supports the decision. Thus, noting concerns about heat sensitivity. In addition, the risk of heat stroke in classrooms without adequate cooling.

This trend is not isolated to New York. Schools across the Northeast and Midwest are facing similar challenges. Temperatures are soaring up to 105°F (41°C). Also, approximately 70 million Americans are under heat alerts. In Massachusetts, Worcester Public Schools concluded their academic year early. Superintendent Rachel Monarrez emphasized the lack of air conditioning in many older school buildings.

To address this growing issue, New York lawmakers recently passed legislation mandating that classrooms exceeding 88°F (31.1°C) be deemed unfit for use. The bill, awaiting Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature, is set to take effect in 2025.

Wessels, who also attended the Minisink Valley Central School District, noted this is the first instance she recalls of schools closing due to heat. Her children’s school only has air conditioning in the cafeteria and administrative offices, highlighting a broader issue of inadequate cooling in educational facilities.

As climate patterns shift, educational institutions are increasingly compelled to adapt to ensure student well-being, raising discussions about long-term solutions for managing extreme weather in schools.
