Yonkers School Lawsuit: Teen mobbed by parents, $40M claim filed

A disturbing incident at Yonkers Montessori Academy has led to a $40 million lawsuit against the city of Yonkers. It’s following an altercation involving parents and a student. Last week, a 13-year-old girl was mobbed and attacked by another student. Also, several parents egged on the violence, an act caught on multiple cellphones.

The victim, referred to as E.W. for privacy, was ambushed on the school’s baseball field. This took place before classes began, with her mother, Alenna Merritt, citing “negligent supervision” by the school. E.W. told reporters she felt alone and terrified as the ordeal unfolded. The incident has since sparked widespread outrage. Also, highlighting concerns about safety and supervision within school environments.

Merritt has withdrawn her daughter from the school, opting for remote schooling through a tutor provided by Yonkers Montessori for the remainder of the year. She states that returning to the school would compromise her daughter’s safety, emphasizing that the school failed to protect E.W. during school hours.

The confrontation escalated when four parents and a grandparent confronted E.W., leading to her being physically assaulted. The Yonkers Police have issued an arrest warrant for one adult involved, on charges including assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

This lawsuit marks Merritt’s second legal action against the school, following an earlier claim of inappropriate conduct by school staff. Both the school and Yonkers Police Department have declined to comment on ongoing legal proceedings, citing the sensitivity of the case and pending investigations.
