Everybody is always talking about how the South took the game over, but look at what the West Coast was doing a decade earlier. Before all the beef nonsense, the West was united and they took over the hip hop world. Without Dr. Dre, it wouldn’t have been a big as it became though.
The Chronic brought in the G-funk era that the West Coast was best-known for and basically inspired Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. But, when people think about The Chronic, they always think about “Dre Day” and “Nuthin’ But A G Thang.” Classic tracks without question, but “Let Me Ride” is that joint though.
Released as the final single off the album, “Let Me Ride” prominently sampled the 1976 hit single from Parliament, “Mothership Connection (Star Child).” Their vocals are included on the hook and other samples come from James Brown and Bill Withers. But, when thinking of the West Coast hip hop explosion, “Let Me Ride” comes to mind.
Twenty years after “Let Me Ride” hit television and radio, the song is still dope and still gets played. Taking things back this Wednesday, of course Dr. Dre had to be featured and “Let Me Ride” is the perfect.
