The year of 1999 was good for Def Jam, as their investments in Jay-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule paid off. When the summer of 1999 hit, they put out Ja Rule’s Venni Vetti Vecci debut album that launched Murder Inc. Records. Irv Gotti began a run as one of the top executives in the game.
During the early part of 1999, Ja Rule released his debut single, “Holla Holla,” which became a summer anthem. Later years wouldn’t be as kind to Ja Rule, but he captivated the streets with this track. Fifteen years later, “Holla Holla” still gets the streets jumping.
“Holla Holla” had tremendous success in 1999 as the debut single from Ja Rule. As the debut single off Venni Vetti Vecci, Ja Rule immediately scored a hit, as he cracked Billboard’s top 40 with the song peaking at number 35. Since then, Ja Rule made a home for himself in the top five before his run ended.
