Back in the 2004-2005 period, hip hop was in a weird place, but everybody out responded by making dope music. This was when Jay-Z retired from the game, 50 Cent was no longer a “new” artist, Lil Wayne first proclaimed “best rapper alive,” and Ja Rule came back. It was a weird time, but T.I. managed to carve out his own place in the game.
In 2004, fresh off a prison sentence, T.I. returned with Urban Legend, his third studio album. He needed to get the attention of the game, so he teamed up with Swizz Beatz for the first single, “Bring ‘Em Out.” The record came complete with a Jay-Z sample and was the sone sports teams got hyped off of.
T.I. used the momentum of this song to become the biggest rapper in the game, a position he held for the next five years. In light of his upcoming album release and his continued success, we chose to look back on when it all clicked for him. “Bring ‘Em Out” is this week’s Wednesday Throwback.
