There was a time when Lil Wayne absolutely dominated the rap game. Since 2010, Drake has owned the game, but his whole run began with Lil Wayne’s co-sign. In 2004, Lil Wayne reached the peak of his career, with Tha Carter, and the single, “Go DJ,” the biggest of his career, at the time. The following year, Lil Wayne released Tha Carter II and launched Young Money. That rough version of Young Money isn’t the version the world knows.

Lil Wayne made a decision which many found unusual, at the time. At the height of his career, Lil Wayne decided to take time off. After releasing two platinum albums within a year of each other, Lil Wayne started releasing mixtapes. Along with mixtapes, Lil Wayne was doing features on almost everybody’s tracks. This is what led to Lil Wayne becoming the hottest rapper in the game and he used his popularity to help Drake and Nicki Minaj grow.

While Drake and Nicki Minaj became stars, outside of Young Money, Lil Wayne was fading from the spotlight. Now that Lil Wayne is back releasing music, it’s clear he’s not the star he once was. But, Lil Wayne remains the legend. Recently, he returned with the video for his single, “Cameras,” where he features Allan Cubas.
