Before him, there were many, after him, there were none. Back in 2000, these were bold words Jay Z proclaimed, as he began to outlast, and outmaneuver his fellow rappers. While they wanted awards and five mics, Jay Z wanted ownership.

By 2001, Jay Z was already worth $100 million and, within five years, was running Def Jam. Following this, Jay Z partnered with Live Nation for Roc Nation. Now, he also has TIDAL, which is marketing his new album, due on Friday.

Long before all of this, when Jay Z was only dreaming of business deals this big, he was making hits. When it looked like “Big Pimpin'” could not be topped, Jay Z linked with Pharrell, for the first time. Their first collaboration was “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me),” a track that established Pharrell, and is this week’s Wednesday Throwback.
