There is reason to celebrate hip hop right now. It seems like everybody is winning, even though nothing has really changed. Given the changes in media and connectivity, it is easier than ever to see how other people live. Enter Fred The Godson and TBM, a hard-working rapper and crew making moves in New York City.

Fred The Godson established himself as a force in the game a few years ago. His buzz is tremendous, so he decided to shed light on his crew. Taking crews back to their old days, Fred The Godson has a solid ten members of TBM. Reef Hustle is among the members of the TBM clique and he is making sure the world pays attention.

Reef Hustle recently took time out to talk to Hip Hop Vibe, since there is a lot going on surrounding his TBM family. With the Talkin’ Bout Money, Vol. 1 mixtape doing well, the conversation centered around this. During the interview, Reef Hustle also spoke on the overall success of the group, and his solo work.

When did you guys begin working on TBM, Vol. 1We started working on this mixtape around the time Fred The Godson released his Contraband mixtape.

Did everything come out the way you expected it to on the tape? I think the project came out great and we worked well, feeding off each other’s energies. Working together was a piece of cake.

Do you think releasing it during the Memorial Weekend craze was the right move for the crew? People in this business say timing is everything. No one was expecting this TBM super-movement to release a project, especially one of this caliber. In this digital age, nothing really comes as a surprise, so I feel the element of surprise is the best way to get a point across.

What is it like to see everybody buzzing about the TBM movement? I’m glad to hear people talking about the music. Word of mouth is the best promotion. We made this project to bridge the different categories in the game today. I believe we will be the foundation for future artists to build on.

Do you think this year is the breakout year for the group? We just got to keep on working hard and enjoying what we came here to do. The music will speak for itself.

As far as solo work, will you feature your TBM family? We are going to give the people what they want. Every member of the crew will have input and features on each other’s projects, even if it is at least an ad-lib. All of our energies will have presence.

Outside of the crew, who are you interested in working with? I am interested in working with musicians, such as violinists, pianists, and anyone who thinks outside of the box. If I feel you are dope, I will be working with you, status in the game does not matter. All I care about is making the music and developing classical pieces.

Are you excited about the upcoming video release for “The Intro?” “The Intro” was exciting for me. I had to give it that real New York flare. I am a Boom Bap head and when Cardiak came through like a superhero, I knew the video was going to be special and the project would come out really dope.
