One of the forefathers of hip hop history was present at A.D. The General’s recent show, the Elegant Hoodness Awards, Grandmaster Caz. He came up in the 1970s with DJ Kool Herc and he was a part of the Cold Crush. There are very few rappers who weren’t inspired by Grandmaster Caz, whether they know it or not.
Hailing from The Bronx, Grandmaster Caz made his mark on the game and had a strong run during the 1980s. As one of the originators of the hip hop movement, he helped ensure the genre became a lifestyle instead of dying off as a fad. His career goes down in history as one of the legendary runs.
Running into Grandmaster Caz allowed the opportunity to interview him for Hip Hop Vibe. In the interview, Grandmaster Caz talked about the battle The Cold Crush Brothers had against Fantastic Five and “Rapper’s Delight.” Grandmaster Caz also talked about the possibility of Cold Crush reuniting, along with old school vs. true school hip hop.
