HHV Comeback of the Year: Nicki Minaj

By Alyssa Debonair

On the low, Nicki Minaj has been one of the biggest artists of 2017. A lot of female rappers emerged this year, with Cardi B being the most-notable of them. Still, each rapper was immediately compared to Nicki, and that’s due to how profound she still is.

Towards the end of last year, Nicki Minaj was all but forgotten, with people even asking what happened to her, that year. Last year really saw Remy Ma dominate. Ironically, Remy Ma ended up using her momentum to bring Nicki Minaj back to the forefront.

When 2017 began, Nicki Minaj made guest appearances on records from Gucci Mane and Jason Derulo. Immediately, Remy Ma responded, delivering “ShETHER,” where she definitely read Nicki Minaj. The energy from this helped propel Nicki Minaj’s reunion with Drake and Lil Wayne, as “No Frauds” became a hit record.

Nicki Minaj waited until she got on 2 Chainz’ album to deliver an official response to Remy Ma, also sending some direct shots at Papoose. But, Nicki Minaj ended up having a bigger rival in Cardi B, who was still considered an up-and-comer, at the time. As Cardi B grew, many tried pitting the ladies against each other, despite he love they showed one another on social media.

Ultimately, Nicki Minaj went from nearly no mentions, in 2016, she was on everything, in 2017. Her appearance on Yo Gotti’s “Rake It Up” gave her a summer smash, without it being her own single. So, with both music, and controversy, she had it, plus Migos put Nicki Minaj and Cardi B on “Motorsport,” with that lineup, alone, propelling that single to also become a hit.

That, plus Lil Uzi Vert’s “The Way Life Goes” remix helped Nicki Minaj stay in the spotlight. A$AP Ferg also has his remix of “Plain Jane” with Nicki, that will have her going in 2018, when she will presumably release her next album. A lot went down, in 2017, and despite the backlash, Nicki Minaj helped sell a lot of records, and definitely got her cut, which gives the Comeback of the Year to Nicki Minaj, for 2017.
