In 2010, Young Jeezy made a statement, saying hip hop should move past the focus on Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. Years after their murders, the hip hop community still revolves around them, in a sense. Young Jeezy felt it was time for the hip hop community to move on from them, while still remembering their legacies.
Much like other general interests, hip hop is always looking for the next big thing. While searching for the next legend, there is often many other artists who are compared to legends of the past. Since he first released “Hustlin’,” Rick Ross has received comparisons to The Notorious B.I.G.
During DMX’s recent interview with Power 105.1, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy’s names were brought up. Charlamagne Tha God said Rick Ross is more like the new Biggie, while Young Jeezy is more like the new Tupac. In the eyes of many, Tupac Shakur was considered one of the best rappers ever, if not the best. However, many have also agreed Tupac did not have a complex lyrical side, but his passion more than made up for this. Many argue the same for Young Jeezy, as his lyrics have never been mind-blowing, but his music is relatable.
Yes, Young Jeezy is among the most-passionate artists in the game, but is he anything close to being a modern-day Tupac Shakur? Along with the lyrics, Tupac was active in the community, becoming a spokesman for the urban community. Young Jeezy gives back, and can be outspoken, but he lacks the influence over the rap game, which Tupac held for years, even years after his death. If Young Jeezy were to die today, would he be quoted and remembered the way Tupac Shakur has been over the past sixteen years?
