Lyricism on a commercial level was thought to be a thing of the past this year. Many of the best rappers in the game dumbed down to appease the masses. This was not the case when Nas decided to launch his comeback.

Life is Good was initially scheduled to be released in 2011, but label disputes held things up. Nas decided nothing would stop him from releasing Life is Good when 2012 came. Picking up where he left off with “Nasty,” Nas leaked several songs.

Sticking a chord in the hearts of men around the world, Nas released “Daughters.” In addition to being entertaining, Nas made men think of their involvements with women much differently. Keeping things going forward, Nas even bent genres by including the late Amy Winehouse on the “Cherry Wine” single.

The first half of 2012 was dominated by Rick Ross and Maybach Music. Nas is not necessarily the same type of artist, but he even made room on his album for Rick Ross to have a couple verses. Overall, Nas showed his lyrical prowess, but managed to have something everyone could relate to. Some time passed since Nas released a classic, but he surely delivered one in 2012, thus earning Hip Hop Vibe’s Album of the Year.
