Last week, the NCAA made a rule which made it tougher for agents to represent their athletes. They made it official that agents must have bachelor’s degrees to become certified. Many saw that as a subliminal shot at LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul who represents numerous NBA superstars which includes James, John Wall, Draymond Green, Ben Simmons and Anthony Davis. Paul is a childhood friend of James’ and has been his agent for years.
According to the NCAA now, they’re backtracking on the bachelor’s degree rule. It’s no longer required by agents. Instead, agents must be currently certified and in good standing with the NBPA. Other rules include having NBPA certification for a minimum of three consecutive years, maintaining professional liability insurance, completing the NCAA qualification exam, and paying required fees.
This move was made by the NCAA to “provide student-athletes with access to hundreds of qualified agents who can offer solid guidance but also protects those same students from unscrupulous actors who may not represent their best interests.” They definitely felt the backlash from the public as a response to how they supposedly feel about Paul. They made the right decision here in reversing their bachelor’s degree requirement.
