Russian Developers Of FaceApp Are Allowed Permission To Save Users’ Photos and Names For Profit

The FaceApp has gone viral over the past 24 hours as celebrities such as Meek Mill, Drake, Jonas Brothers, Kevin Hart, and many pro athletes have been using it as well. Users can place photos of themselves into the app to make themselves look younger or older. Now, there may be some issues from a security standpoint.

FaceApp has reportedly given permission to the developers of the app in St. Petersberg, Russia to save people’s photos and possibly even use them for profit, according to The New York Post. This includes full names, photos, usernames, etc.

“You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable… royalty-free… license to use, adapt, publish, distribute your user content… in all media formats… when you post or otherwise share,” said digital strategist James Whatley.

The app was originally created in 2017 by these developers at Wireless Lab. Users of FaceApp can see in the terms and conditions that these photos of people could be saved. Setting Apple iOS photo permissions to “never,” won’t stop the app from using the photos for profit either.

FaceApp has been very fun to use but it looks like it comes with a big risk as well. We will see in the upcoming days if anyone’s images have been used in any way to benefit the app.
