Harry Belafonte passes away at the age of 96
Harry Belafonte was a leader during the Civil Rights era. As an entertainer, he used his platform to speak about the injustices of the world. His efforts helped to open the door for the current era of Black entertainer billionaires. Belafonte was one of the first entertainers to work as both a musician and an actor. In addition, his daughter, Shari Belafonte, has become a successful actress. This morning, the family revealed Harry Belafonte passed away.
Harry Belafonte impacted the culture in numerous ways. During a time when people could lose their lives for speaking out, he did so. In addition, Belafonte often performed for White audiences during the height of segregation. Along with the efforts of the other Civil Rights leaders, Belafonte’s work led to integration, among other things. Through his lifetime, Belafonte continued to speak out about social injustice.
Harry Belafonte remained a leader, well into his senior years. Not only would he call out social injustice from outside of the Black community, he also called out Black entertainers. In 2013, he wanted to have a meeting with Jay-Z, over some of his statements. Two years later, Jay-Z used a TIDAL concert to donate to Belafonte’s non profit. Over the past few years, Harry Belafonte has kept a low profile. This morning, news broke of his passing. Belafonte was 96 years old.
