Different phases take place in the rap game. When 50 Cent initially tried to enter the game, things were hardcore. Ironically, one of the rappers leading the pack, Ja Rule, would soon usher the trend of “hip pop” to the masses. Ja Rule was a longtime enemy of the emerging 50 Cent.
50 Cent was the originator of using the mixtape scene to gain major label attention, using his series of mixtapes to meet Eminem. Following the Eminem meeting, 50 Cent was a millionaire and his feud with Ja Rule was public. The nail in the coffin for Ja Rule, the previous year’s hero was Get Rich or Die Tryin’.
But, after the release of Get Rich or Die Tryin’, 50 Cent soon took over Ja Rule’s position in the rap game with “hip pop.” This did not go unnoticed by fans, who were quick to call 50 Cent out over this. Acknowledging the change in his style, 50 Cent said his lifestyle changed, but he promised to take his fans back after the Curtis release.
It was during the Curtis promo run when 50 Cent began feuding with Interscope Records. The feud escalated after the commercial failure of Before I Self Destruct. Aside from the “Baby by Me” single, the album was considered a critical and commercial failure and 50 pointed his finger at Interscope for the direction they wanted him to take and their lack of promotion. Last year, 50 Cent called his label out, saying he would not support any new music they release from him.
At the time promoting The Big 10, 50 Cent said he would rely on his mixtapes in the future. Weeks later, 50 Cent returned to work on his new album. Recently, 50 Cent returned to his Twitter, saying he had been away because of the work he was putting together for the new album. After the announcement, 50 Cent said it would be better than Get Rich or Die Tryin’.
