A shocking incident occurred at Cheko’s Mexican Restaurant & Bar in Austin, Texas. 70-year-old owner, Sergio Alberto Vasquez, was assaulted by a group of unruly customers who also fled without paying. The altercation occurred on April 28. When Vasquez responded to his staff’s call about the disruptive behavior of two men and a woman, he got more than he bargained for.
According to surveillance footage, after complaining about the food and refusing to pay, the trio escalated their aggression by smashing plates. As a result, Vasquez took action. Vasquez, attempting to document their actions by photographing their vehicle’s license plate, was then attacked. “One of the guys saw me with my phone, got out of the car, and started hitting me,” Vasquez recounted to KVUE.
The violent encounter continued outside until other patrons intervened. They potentially saved Vasquez from further harm. As a result, he expressed deep gratitude towards these customers for their bravery and support during the ordeal.
In the aftermath, Vasquez’s daughter, Maria, took to Facebook to share the distressing footage. Also, she appealed for public assistance in identifying the assailants. Her post highlighted her father’s dedication to his restaurant and appealed for prayers and information leading to the identification of the culprits.
The Austin Police Department is actively investigating the incident, although no suspects have been identified yet. The community has rallied around Vasquez, condemning the violence and offering support to ensure such an incident does not happen again.
This act of violence against a senior business owner has sparked outrage and a call for increased safety measures for local businesses in Austin.
