So, you know the face, but you’re having trouble remembering the name huh? An essential part of hip hop is the proper name. A.D.Scott has gone through quite a few before settling on his current name. Two years ago, A.D.Scott was featured in the On the Rise section on Hip Hop Vibe as ‘Comz.’

Lyrically, there are not too many artists in the same conversation as A.D.Scott, but most know there is a lot more to hip hop than what is displayed. Going through a series of changes over the past few years, A.D.Scott feels he is finally ready to take his fair shot at the game. Along with this new plan comes a new crew.

A.D.Scott recently talked to Hip Hop Vibe about this recent change in name and his career moves. During this interview, A.D. Scott talked about his new crew, which goes under the name of Idea Squad. He also spoke on his upcoming cover of Nas’ legendary single, “Nas is Like…”

What is with this name change? I needed a name that I didn’t feel awkward introducing myself as on stage or to someone on the street. “Kid this” or “young that” doesn’t sound professional enough to be taken seriously anymore. A.D. Scott is my name. Always has been.

Including yourself, more and more artists make their own beats now, what makes rapper/producers so special? I look at it this way, one person draws a pictures, one person paints the colors in, then another person puts it on display. We look at that creation and call that a “work of art” groups working together to make art. An artist has the ability to do all of these things, write the song, create the music, put it on the display for people to hear. The difference when people hear this they are not hearing a “Work of Art” they are hearing an “Artist’s Work”

Though you are known as a standalone artist, you have a crew now right? Right but, not so much a rap crew. Were are just a team of idealist. We tell each other whats hot and whats not and help each other to succeed in our own solo missions. We call ourselves the IDEA squad.

Can you tell us more about the Idea Squad? It’s just that, an Idea Squad. Anyone with valid input can join. Whether you are a rapper, singer, painter, or you do YouTube skits and just need ideas. We are the place you go before your product hits the public. Everyone on the squad saw the “A.D. Like” video a month ago. It’s all about surrounding yourself around creative people and getting real feedback aimed at helping you put your best foot forward when you chase after whatever it is you aspire to be. Check out the Idea Squad here.

Can you tell us a bit about your “Nas Is Like…” cover? It’s amazing how people will call you crazy for chasing your dreams, but will use you so they can chase theirs. I saw the Nas is like beat as an opportunity to express how I feel until I ran out of breath. No chorus. I just needed to vent. I was going through some major life changes, from playing ball on a high level, to following an entertainment career. People I saw as close didn’t look at me the same, like I was making a mistake, friends went missing. I guess it just got to me. So I called it “A.D. Like…”

Were you a big fan of Nas growing up? Right, right, got off subject a little. Yes and no, my folks bumped nothing but hip hop when I was young. On long car rides, I would grow fond of a few songs that stood out and fumble through the lyrics. Turns out a lot of those songs were Nas. I just didn’t know it. “Nas is Like…” was just one of many. I recently became a big fan of Nas. His latest album Life is Good blew me away.

Since you are not into mixtapes, what should fans expect, an EP or a street album? My main project will be THE DEMO. It will be an EP of 4-5 songs me and the Idea Squad will decide on that will give me my best shot at this industry. As of now, THE DEMO is my main priority. In between time I’m sure I’ll drop a few “mixtapes” of the songs that don’t make THE DEMO.

Who are some collaborations you have, or would like to have? There was something magic about the way DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince or Pete Rock & CL Smooth; Did it to make a live show Electric. I want to bring that to the table because Most modern rap performance are boring. On that note, I want to rock with a true DJ and do hip hop shows the right way. Doesn’t have to be anyone big name. just someone dedicated to the cause. we can blow up together. My ultimate collaborative goal is Atlantic Records. I will Get there. I will work with them.
