Suicide and hip hop go hand-in-hand. It is a sad statement, but it has been true, especially in recent months. Capital Steez, of Pro Era, committed suicide right before the end of 2012. Earlier in the year, famed industry executive, Chris Lighty, also committed suicide.

Before his untimely death, The Notorious B.I.G. flirted with the topic of suicide on his records and Jay-Z flirted with the topic on Reasonable Doubt. Sixteen years after his death, there are rappers still spitting suicide flows over their records. A$AP Rocky spits a suicidal flow on “Phoenix,” which caused a bit of concern.

Still mourning the loss his father, A$AP Rocky spoke to MTV News and he opened up on his “Phoenix” track. As is the case with anyone who takes their destiny into their own hands, one is dealt with a series of obstacles, each bigger than the last. Even the strongest of people, while embarking on this journey, think about the idea of suicide, which is what A$AP Rocky points out to MTV News.
