Akon says Chris Brown could’ve been the next Michael Jackson
Akon and Chris Brown rose to fame during the same span of time. Late in the summer of 2005, Akon dropped “Locked Up” and it became a hit single. In addition, he added Styles P to the remix, and the song would become an even bigger hit. After that, Akon dropped his album, Trouble, and achieved more commercial success with his single, “Lonely.” However, his standout moment, early in his career, came from him doing the hook on Jeezy’s breakthrough single, “Soul Survivor.”
Akon watched Chris Brown follow a similar trajectory, during the late summer of 2005. When Chris Brown dropped “Run It,” he rose to the top of Billboard Hot 100. As opposed to Styles P, CB reached out to Juelz Santana, and got him for the official remix. In addition, when Chris Brown released his self titled debut album, he reached multiplatinum success. Nearly every single from the album ended up reaching number one on some chart. As a result, CB began receiving comparisons to Michael Jackson.
Akon recently sat down with Shannon Sharpe for a “Club Shay Shay” interview. During the conversation, they did discuss Chris Brown. Shannon Sharpe mentioned something along the lines of Michael Jackson’s talent and artists who have come close to that. As a result, Akon brought up Chris Brown, saying he could have reached Michael’s level. In Akon’s opinion, he believes Chris did not have the right team around him to create to reach the MJ level.
