Perhaps the biggest breakout artist of 2011 was Big Sean. In a hip hop scene known for Eminem and his crew of rappers, Big Sean introduced the world to another type of Detroit hip hop. Big Sean rose to stardom through several mixtapes he released on the streets.
Wanting more for himself, Big Sean cornered Kanye West and he was eventually signed to G.O.O.D. Music. Getting signed was only one part of Big Sean’s rise to fame, as he waited for the release of his debut album. The wait would last two years, leading to Big Sean growing angry.
However, when Big Sean finally released his debut album, he proved to be a hitmaker. Early in 2011, Big Sean delivered “My Last,” followed by his summer anthem, “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay,” closing the year with his “Dance (A$$)” single and the Nicki Minaj remix. With Nicki Minaj adding a verse, the song climbed the charts, going platinum, and has now gone double platinum.
