In the eyes of many, 2012-2013 was the peak of Cash Money Records, as they had everybody. Not only was Lil Wayne still the biggest name in rap, he had his Young Money label. On the roster, Drake and Nicki Minaj were top five, in their own right, and Tyga had hits.
Outside of that, Cash Money also had DJ Khaled and We The Best, with him and Ace Hood making hits. Then, there was also Bow Wow and Busta Rhymes signed to the label. In 2011, Birdman even said that the Maybach Music label would sign to Cash Money, but they didn’t.
Slowly, Cash Money lost its grip on the game, starting with DJ Khaled leaving the label. Then, Tyga sued Cash Money to get out of his deal with Young Money. Finally, Lil Wayne made public noise, forcing his way off, or so it seemed, and taking Young Money with him, prompting Rick Ross to drop a diss record.
Since then, Birdman and Lil Wayne have been back on good terms. Last week, Birdman was on Complex’s “Everyday Struggle,” where he addressed all of this. In short, he said that he is on great terms with Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. When asked if they were still signed to Cash Money, he said “of course,” and that Young Money will “forever” be in business with him, as long as they are in that [Republic Records] building.
