Today, Cardi B finally released her highly anticipated single, “Up.” The music video for it was released as well as fans were impressed with the visuals there along with the record in general. It has since hit the top of the charts on Apple Music.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Cardi discussed the Up record, Chicago drill influence, and why she didn’t release her second album in 2020.

“My last song was very sexual, very sexual, so I always want my next songs to be different than the one before,” Cardi explained regarding her versatility. “When I started rapping, when I first put music out, like my mixtape…This might sound crazy, but I got really inspired of Drill Chicago music. I was young, and I liked that and everything, so my mixtape was very all about gangster violence. If it’s up, then it’s stuck. That’s where I wanted to take it with this record.”

As far as Cardi’s sophomore album, she felt that she didn’t “have the right songs.” She originally planned to put it out last year but for 2021, she believes that it has to happen.

“I really wanted to put out an album last year, but it was like, “I feel like I don’t have the right songs.  have recorded so many songs. I think I’ve got like 50 songs recorded, and I’m just still not satisfied. If I’m not satisfied, I’m just not satisfied, but I really want to put out an album this year. I feel like I have no choice now. Now, I feel like I exceeded my limit of holding. I just need to stop with the fear.”

As of now, there is still no official release date or title for Cardi’s forthcoming album. Hopefully, that will change very soon. Back in December, she revealed that she wanted to fly some fans out in February to hear the album. It’s unclear if that hinted that the album was completed or not, though.
