Carlee Russell sentenced to one year in jail after staged kidnapping

Back in July, Carlee Russell trended on social media, after going missing in Hoover, AL. Initial reports claimed that she had initially gone missing after stopping on the side of an interstate to help a baby that was in a stroller. However, the end result was that Russell actually faked her kidnapping for some reason, as she was eventually found at a nearby Birmingham hotel. Russell also had mobile phone searches of the film “Taken,” as well as if she needed to pay for Amber Alerts.

As a result, Russell went on to be charged with misdemeanor false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. Moreover, she has now been sentenced in this case. This comes after Russell plead guilty to one count to the initial false reporting to law enforcement authorities and one count of falsely reporting an incident. Therefore, Russell has been sentenced to one year in jail, as well as being required to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution, per ABC 33-40 and WVTM 13.

Carlee Russell’s incident was one of the biggest trending topics of the year. Many initially voiced support for her, up until her going missing was a hoax. To this day, many wonder why she put herself in that situation to begin with.
