On Friday night, the world lost one of its most amazing human beings. Civil rights legend, John Lewis, sadly passed away at the age of 80 tonight after six months of going through pancreatic cancer. This was revealed tonight in a statement by House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. He was also currently representing Georgia’s 5th district in the U.S House of Representatives.
One of the most memorable moments of Lewis in history was back in 1965 at the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. He was beaten severely by state troopers. He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and was the last of the Big Six civil rights activists The others were MLK Jr, James Farmer, A. Philip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, and Whitney Young.
Lewis started undergoing cancer treatment at the end of December. Prior to Lewis’ passing, he had served in the house since 1986, which is a total of 17 terms. RIP to a man who contributed to the right side of history and his work in trying to bring equality to all.
