CONFIRMED: Jay-Z has returned to Def Jam
Back in 2007, Jay-Z made it clear he did not want to be in charge of Def Jam. When he stepped down from his role as president of the label, there were rumors of him taking his label, Roc-A-Fella Records, elsewhere and creating a powerhouse. By 2008, Jay-Z bought out his artist contract at Def Jam and created a superlabel.
The only downside to this was that Jay-Z was forced to leave Roc-A-Fella Records, which he sold to Def Jam in 2003. Roc Nation was born and Jay-Z established deals with Atlantic and Columbia Records, respectively. Atlantic Records housedĀ The Blueprint 3 and Columbia Records pushes J. Cole’s music.
Roc Nation is also a leading management company, but Jay-Z recently revealed he took back ownership of Roc-A-Fella Records. Recently, there have been rumors of Jay-Z returning to Def Jam because of theĀ Magna Carta Holy Grail packaging. On the Def Jam conference call with 2 Chainz, it was revealed Jay-Z is back at Def Jam.
