This weekend, Genius: Aretha Franklin premiered on NatGeo. Before the movie premiered, Aretha Franklin’s family protested its premiere. The Franklin family made it clear it has nothing to do with the cast.

Cynthia Erivo is the one who took on the task of reimagining Aretha Franklin. A singer and songwriter, in her own right, Erivo is also an actress. Because of this, she was a strong choice for the lead.

After the Genius: Aretha Franklin premiere, Cynthia Erivo called into “The Breakfast Club.” Virtually, she sat down with DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne Tha God. During the interview, she spoke on Aretha, Hollywood’s diversity, her new music, and much more.
