Since his 2003 debut, David Banner shed his weight to become a muscular rapper, who is focused on health. Underneath his hardcore Southern rhymes are lyrics about self-empowerment and awareness of the world around us.
The style of David Banner is a complete contradiction to the stereotype placed upon rappers from the South, by rappers and critics of other regions. Recently, David Banner discussed his opinion on the current state of hip hop. When speaking on the younger rappers, Banner said he thinks they are doing things right, it is those in his generation who did not do everything right.
Discussing backpack rappers, David Banner gave them credit, saying they are “rapping they ass off,” but the problem comes when their beats are sub-par. Banner said they are rapping and rapping well, but the beat is letting them down. Discussing freestyle rappers, Banner said they dominate the freestyle game, but they cannot make a hit record. Banner goes on to say the rappers who make hit records are usually the ones who cannot rap at all.
Another Southern rapper in touch with his intelligent side is Big K.R.I.T. During his interview, David Banner also spoke on the rising rapper, who is preparing his Def Jam debut. Earlier, David Banner co-signed Big K.R.I.T., but Banner said their relationship goes much deeper than that. Speaking on their relationship, Banner said he told Big K.R.I.T. he did not want the people to know they were cool with each other, because it would take away from K.R.I.T.’s own accomplishments. David Banner said Big K.R.I.T. is a man who has to stand on his own.
David Banner said he told Big K.R.I.T. to go out and get his haters and then turn them into his fans. Banner went on to tell Big K.R.I.T. how it is all about him and not David Banner. Now, with Big K.R.I.T. preparing his debut album, he is his own man and he does not need David Banner vouching for him.
