David Banner is the rapper who put Mississippi hip hop on the map. Before Banner, nobody was talking about rappers from Jackson, MS. When David Banner broke through, he left a lasting impact. During the summer of 2003, he dropped “Like A Pimp.” In addition, he had Lil’ Flip on the song. This was right after Lil’ Flip emerged with “The Way We Ball.” Also, this was right before Flip’s takeover with “Game Over,” the following summer. Now, Big K.R.I.T. is the emerging Mississippi rapper.
David Banner faded from the spotlight, but he kept his work relevant. While Banner was out of the spotlight, he was producing for many of the hottest artists in the game. In 2008, David Banner launched his comeback. Upon his return, David was far different from how he used to be. Initially, he was just another rapper, but with a creative message. However, he was viewed as another chubby Southern rapper. In 2008, he returned in great physical shape.
David Banner is now passing the banner to the next in line. Big K.R.I.T. signed to Def Jam and now he’s the future of hip hop. K.R.I.T. is furthering the true fact that Southern rappers can also be lyrical. It’s honestly weird that this was even up for debate. However, K.R.I.T. is out here making moves. He has his single, “Believe,” that is making noise. Recently, K.R.I.T. filmed the video for this song. In a huge sign of support, David Banner pulled up to make his cameo in the video.
