Diddy compares Rick Ross to The Notorious B.I.G.

In his career, Sean “Diddy” Combs has been fortunate enough to work with three generations of hip hop music. He began during the late 1980s, which were dominated by the likes of Heavy D & the Boyz. Then, he started Bad Boy Records in the late 1990s and had the opportunity to sign such artists as The Notorious B.I.G. and Mase, while working with Jay-Z. As time has gone on, he has also had the opportunity to work with newer acts, such as Rick Ross.

Throughout his career, Rick Ross has received comparisons to Biggie. Initially, many thought that he was trying to present himself the way that Biggie did. Ross, like many other rappers did admit that he was greatly influenced by Big. It just happened that he wanted to rap and he happened to be overweight with a deep voice. While his debut album received some acclaim, it was written off by his vocals sounding stained to be like The Notorious B.I.G.’s.

Rick Ross did not begin to receive comparisons about Biggie, as far as style goes until he performed with DJ Khaled, T.I., Birdman, and Lil Wayne for 2007’s “We Takin’ Over.” It was in the video where Khaled and Ross paid homage to Biggie and Diddy when they were riding in a Mercedes and they were forced to drive backwards as Rick Ross rapped his verse. That part of the video was based on Biggie’s 1997 video, “Hypnotize.”

When Rick Ross released his 2008 album, Trilla, it was hailed as a classic Mafioso album. Most of the music from The Notorious B.I.G. was credited as Mafioso rap. His video for the single, “The Boss,” featured a scene where Ross was in the bed, shirtless, with four women surrounding him as he was on the phone with some of his associates. This scene also paid homage to a scene out of the Biggie video, “Warning.”

During the 2008 installment of MTV’s Hottest MCs in the Game, they credited Ross’ incorporation of Biggie’s style into his own style as a reason why he should be on the list. Much like The Notorious B.I.G., Rick Ross is the biggest artist from his region of music and he is currently involved in a high-profile feud with another prominent artist in 50 Cent. But, with the way that their feud is playing out, things will not be getting violent.

Ever since Rick Ross has been in the game, he has received multiple comparisons to The Notorious B.I.G. There has only been one person that was blessed with the opportunity to work closely with both artists. The one person that has had that opportunity is Sean “Diddy” Combs. Things have drastically changed since he last worked with B.I.G., but his love for the music remains. After having the chance to work with both of the rappers, Diddy said that there are a lot of similarities between the two rappers.

For his upcoming single, “Angels,” Diddy sampled a verse from Biggie and he brought Rick Ross on for the remix. It was then that he noticed the similarities between the two rappers.
