Dolly Parton praises Beyoncé’s bold take on “Jolene” cover

Dolly Parton recently expressed her admiration for Beyoncé’s modern rendition of her 1973 hit “Jolene.” In an interview with E! News, Parton revealed she was surprised by Beyoncé’s unique spin on the classic song, featured on the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer’s Cowboy Carter album.

“Well, I think it was very bold of her,” Parton told E! News. “When they said she was gonna do ‘Jolene,’ I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn’t. But I love what she did to it.”

Parton added that as a songwriter, she appreciates different interpretations of her work, regardless of how they’re done. Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene” replaces the original plea, “please don’t take my man,” with a confident warning: “I’m warning you, don’t come for my man.” Beyoncé’s empowered lyrics also dismiss the titular Jolene as no real threat to her relationship.

“Takes more than beauty and seductive stares/To come between a family and a happy man,” Beyoncé sings. “Jolene, I’m a woman too/Thе games you play are nothing new/So you don’t want no heat with me, Jolene.”

Parton praised Beyoncé’s assertive new lyrics and the way she made the song her own.

“She wasn’t gonna go beg some other woman like I did,” Parton continued. “‘Don’t steal my man.’ S—, get out here, b!tch. You ain’t stealin’ mine.”

Parton has long been an advocate for Beyoncé covering “Jolene.” As a result, she celebrated the song’s release on social media. On March 29, she tweeted, “Wow, I just heard Jolene. Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it!”

In February, Parton was among the first to congratulate Beyoncé for hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart with her cover. “I’m a big fan of Beyoncé and very excited that she’s done a country album,” Parton wrote on Instagram. “So congratulations on your Billboard Hot Country number one single.”

Parton’s enthusiastic endorsement underscores the powerful crossover appeal of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album and highlights the enduring legacy of “Jolene” as a timeless classic reimagined for a new generation.
