Don Cornelius’ death has been ruled Suicide

Spirits are usually high every February in the urban community, as February 1 marks the first day of Black History Month. Throughout the month, stories of told of the pioneers who fought for equality and made history for the black race. Don Cornelius is a major part of Black History, due to his creation of “Soul Train” and the success the brand has enjoyed over nearly forty years.

For years to come, however, Don Cornelius will be known for other reasons in Black History, as he committed suicide on Febrary 1, 2012. The apparent suicide of one of the earliest black media moguls shocked many. Don Cornelius appeared happy and had major plans for the future, including a “Soul Train” film. Because of his suicide, there were questions about what prompted such a successful man to take his own life.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on the body of the former television host on February 3. The results have made it back, exactly one week after his son, Tony Cornelius found the elder Cornelius dead in his Los Angeles home. On February 4, a farewell service was given to Don Cornelius’ friends and fans in Harlem. Throughout this ordeal, Tony Cornelius has served as the spokesperson for his family, thanking the fans for their support and well wishes.
