In the middle of the controversy, Drake continues to win. Before releasing his debut album, or even having a record deal, Drake made history. The Toronto rapper became the first rap to top the Billboard Rap Songs with a song off a mixtape. During the summer of 2009, Drake did this with his “Best I Ever Had” single. Drake would again make the charts being featured on “Forever” and “Say Something,” before reclaiming the spot on his own with “Over” and “Fancy.”
While he has not been competing for very long, Drake quickly began to rival Diddy’s record of eleven number one rap songs on Billboard. Last fall, on the heels of “Headlines'” success, Drake tied Diddy with eleven number one rap songs. Many felt it was only a matter of time before Drake would surpass the Bad Boy honcho. Immediately following its release, Drake’s “Make Me Proud,” with Nicki Minaj became a massive hit single.
Last week, “Make Me Proud” finally hit number one and Drake broke the tie between Diddy. In this process, Drake has set a new record for most number one songs on Billboard Rap Songs.
