Dream Con Apologizes After Liking Anti-Megan Thee Stallion Comments

Megan Thee Stallion is once again facing online hate—this time from an unexpected corner of the Black entertainment community. The popular rapper, activist, and cultural icon was recently at the center of controversy involving Dream Con, a Black-owned fan convention known for uplifting creators across the realms of anime, gaming, comics, and entertainment.

This week, fans noticed that Dream Con’s official Instagram account had liked several comments that supported Tory Lanez, the rapper currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan in the foot in 2020. The move triggered immediate backlash, especially since Megan is scheduled to appear and speak at the event later this month.

Fans Outraged by Dream Con’s Social Media Activity

As screenshots of the Instagram likes circulated on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, Megan’s supporters were quick to call out Dream Con’s perceived disrespect and insensitivity. The liked comments reportedly included dismissive or sarcastic remarks about Megan’s trauma, seemingly undermining the outcome of a highly publicized and deeply personal criminal case.

Given that Dream Con is promoted as a safe space for Black creativity, expression, and community empowerment, the move struck a nerve. Many felt it was particularly egregious for the convention to show any level of support for Lanez—or tolerance for anti-Megan sentiment—especially with her name on the guest list.

Dream Con Issues Formal Apology on Twitter/X

In response to the backlash, Dream Con posted a lengthy apology on Twitter late last night, acknowledging their role in contributing to online toxicity.

“We love and support Megan Thee Stallion. We’re deeply sorry for the recent activity on our social media platforms that involved liking and engaging with negative comments directed at her,” the statement began. “We recognize that our actions contributed to a negative online environment, and we take full responsibility as we work toward fostering a more positive and respectful space.”

The apology continued:

“It does not reflect Dream Con’s views, values, nor support for Megan, and we’re committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for our entire community. Megan is not only a powerhouse in music and culture, but also a symbol of resilience and empowerment for so many around the world. We stand with her.”

Dream Con further pledged to implement “stricter oversight” of their social media team moving forward to ensure such incidents “never happen again.”

Megan Responds—Indirectly—on TikTok

While Megan Thee Stallion has not directly addressed Dream Con’s Instagram behavior, she did take to TikTok earlier this week to clap back at Tory Lanez and the persistent online smear campaign against her.

In a passionate message written in all caps, the “Savage” rapper made it clear she’s tired of being villainized by internet trolls and misinformation:

“I’M SICK OF THIS SHT LEAVE ME TF ALONE!!!! HE AIN’T DARE GET ON THAT STAND AND DENY HE SHOT ME AND THAT WAS HIS CHOICE BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE DID THAT SHT!”

“IDGAF ABT A BLOG OR A BOT!!! WHY IN TF WOULD ME … MEGAN THEE STALLION HAVE TO LIE ON THIS MF ABT SHOOTING ME! FACTS ARE FACTS,” she wrote. “HE DID IT, IT WAS PROVEN IN COURT. F*CK THE HATE CAMPAIGN ON THE INTERNET. TORY, YOU SHOT ME!!”

Online Hate Still Follows Megan Despite Legal Victory

In December 2022, Tory Lanez was convicted of three felony charges related to the 2020 shooting and sentenced in August 2023 to ten years in prison. Yet, online support for Lanez has persisted, bolstered by conspiracy theories, selective misinformation, and high-profile personalities casting doubt on the court’s findings.

Megan, meanwhile, has repeatedly spoken about the emotional and psychological toll of the public backlash, including during interviews with GQElle, and her tearful 2023 appearance at the Women of the Year awards.

She has emerged stronger—reclaiming her narrative through music, public appearances, and her current Hot Girl Summer Tour—but moments like this demonstrate that the scrutiny has not let up.

Why This Matters

The Dream Con incident serves as a reminder of how institutions—especially those rooted in Black culture—must take care in how they engage online, particularly when trauma and justice are involved.

For many fans, Dream Con is more than just a fan convention—it’s a cultural sanctuary, one of the few mainstream events centered around Black geek and nerd communities. To see the convention’s official page interact with dismissive, misogynistic comments was disappointing and hurtful to a large portion of their community, especially Black women.

Though the apology is a step in the right direction, the incident underscores the importance of accountability, especially when it comes to high-profile platforms that influence culture and community.

What’s Next for Megan and Dream Con?

Despite the controversy, Megan is still expected to speak at Dream Con later this month, although fans are watching closely to see if she or her team will respond further.

For Dream Con, the focus will now shift to restoring trust—not just through statements, but through visible, measurable action. That may include diversifying their internal team, improving social media oversight, and demonstrating ongoing support for survivors of violence.

As for Megan, her message remains consistent: she’s moving forward, refusing to let lies, bots, or biased narratives erase the facts or silence her truth.
