Drunk Delta passenger gets 6 months for assaulting flight attendant

A New York man has been sentenced to six months in federal prison. This follows a drunken outburst on a Delta flight from Tel Aviv to JFK. During the flight, he attacked a flight attendant who had cut off his alcohol supply. Shachar Bivas, 44, of Long Island, was sentenced on Thursday for the incident. It occurred on May 31 last year.

Bivas had requested a vodka drink on Flight 235 and was served once. However, crew members noticed he was visibly intoxicated and cut him off. As a result, leading to his violent reaction. According to court documents, Bivas punched and pushed a flight attendant. Thus, damaging their uniform.

After being denied more alcohol, Bivas claimed he was upset over his father’s recent death. Despite being offered coffee and asked to return to his seat, he repeatedly demanded alcohol and a cigarette. Thus, becoming increasingly aggressive. At one point, he punched a refrigerator near a flight attendant’s head. Later, he assaulted the same attendant, bruising their arm and tearing their uniform.

Other crew members had to restrain Bivas for the remainder of the 12-hour flight. The flight captain considered an emergency landing. However, he ultimately decided against it, managing the situation with limited crew available due to rest schedules.

Bivas pleaded guilty in December to interference with a flight attendant. That’s a charge carrying a zero-to-six-month prison term. He was also fined $9,500 and must surrender to authorities by August 2.
