One of the biggest pop stars of 2014 is facing a serious case of infringement. In a shocking lawsuit, singer Ed Sheeran faces copyright infringement for sampling Marvin Gaye’s hit “Let’s Get It On.” The copyright is in regards to Ed Sheeran’s single “Thinking Out Loud.” The lawsuit was filed by the heirs of the song’s co-writer and composer Ed Townsend in early April of this year.

Ed Sheeran is one of the most recognizable voices of pop music. Since signing with Asylum Records in 2011, he’s created a streak of memorable hit singles. Although his debut album +(Plus) was a major success, his second album x (Multiply) solidified his status as a superstar. Named the best selling album of 2015, the lead single from the album “Thinking Out Loud,” also earned Ed Sheeran his first Grammy. Since its release it has been streamed more than 2.216 billion times. His third album ÷ (Divide) also reached commercial success, ranking as the top album in the world for 2017.

Despite Ed Sheeran’s impressive ability to create unique pop hits, one of his greatest singles is up for question. As court proceedings continue, more details are revealed about the lawsuit. This claim accuses Sheeran of “unlawfully employing the heart of Gaye’s song, including harmonic progressions, and melodic rhythmic elements.” In the latest court session, Ed Sheeran played his guitar for the jury to prove there was no comparison. Ed Sheeran has also stated if found guilty of infringement, he would quit music all together.
