Decades ago, there were rumors of a feud between Erick Sermon’s EPMD’s group and Rakim. Sermon did admit that shots had been fired and he informed Nas of the situation. When Nas’ album came out, he rapped about the situation, building up publicity.
The feud never got to the level where the two parties were calling each other out on record, but things were tense. Erick Sermon said that shots that were fired early on were not even aimed at Rakim, he just took the issue on. Actually, he spoke of Rakim as his mentor, saying that he inspired him to rap.
Erick Sermon said that the two eventually met up and Rakim put his issues with EPMD to rest. It is not as if their feud lasted that long, or that it was very serious.
